William George Weston ROBERTSON was born on 18th May 1888. According to his Attestation Paper he was born at Wallgate near Boorama, NSW. According to records of births, deaths and marriages in NSW, his birth was registered at Walgett and his parents were William and Sarah J Robertson.

William joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways on 12th November 1910 as a tram conductor (casual) in Sydney. His position was made permanent on 20th October 1911. On 3rd October 1914 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

His date of joining the AIF was 13th September 1914. He was posted to the 4th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Private (Service Number 1046). He enlisted as a single man and nominated his mother, then residing in Annandale St, Annandale, in Sydney, as his next of kin. According to records of births, deaths and marriages in NSW, he married Maggie Bella (née) Oag sometime in 1914, and their marriage was registered at Annandale. His military record shows his wife was living at the same address as his mother, at least initially.

The 4th Infantry Battalion left Australia for Egypt in October 1914 and arrived there on 2nd December 1914 after a stopover in Albany, WA. The Battalion left Egypt in early April 1915 for the start of the Gallipoli campaign. It took part in the ANZAC landings on 25th April 1915 as part of the second and third waves. It then began a role in the defence of the beachhead which lasted until August 1915.

On 1 May 1915 William was killed in action.

The location of his grave is unknown, and he is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. His place of association is Annandale, Sydney, NSW.

After his death his widow was granted a pension of £52 per year, starting from 18th August 1915, By this time she had moved to Guyra, NSW). By 1920 she had re-married and was living near Campbelltown, NSW. William’s mother died in 1922.
