Robert John Dougherty enlisted at almost 51 years of age from Sandgate, Queensland. His two sons had enlisted only weeks beforehand. It was reported in the local paper that Robert enlisted to “help his boys”. The three all transferred to the 49th Battalion in Egypt, on the same day, 29 February 1916.
The 49th Battalion was involved in the very heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm in early September 1916. It is probable that Robert took didn’t take part in the battle.
One son, Victor Clyde Dougherty, was killed during the attack and the other son, James Oakwell Dougherty was said to have been seriously wounded by the same shell.
Robert fell ill during early 1917 and was evacuated to England with debility. The doctors discovered he was 53 years of age and returned him to Australia in May 1917, with ‘debility and overage’.
