Arnold Bernays Harvey was born in East Adelaide, Adelaide South Australia, in November 1888 and passed away on the 27th of July, 1974. He was a son to Thomas Harvey and Alice Mary Harvey, and brother to Ronald MacPherson Harvey and Elizabeth Lacell Moffitt. Before joining the army, he was married to Robina Harvey, and had 1 child, who is unknown. We don't know where he went to school, however, he went on to be an accountant after his schooling years. He grew up in Woodville, Charles Sturt area.
Service papers/Location of Service
Arnold enlisted on the 4th of March, 1917 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia at 28 years and 5 months old. He was 5 feet and 8 and a half inches tall, had light brown hair and blue eyes. He joined the 50th Infantry Battalion, which was based in Mouquet Farm, France, as a Private on the 11 of April, 1916. However, before this, the 50th Infantry Battalion was trained in Egypt. He was then moved to the 13th Infantry Brigade Headquarters, which was also based in the Western Front in France.
Experiences of War
Arnold was transferred between units many times during his service in the army. He started off in the 50th Infantry Battalion as a Private on the 11 of April, 1916, which fought in France. However he was moved to the 13th Infantry Brigade Headquarters as a Private still on 4th August 1917. And then 13 days later on the 17th of August, he was still in 13th Infantry Brigade Headquarters but he was a Corporal (an non-commissioned officer). And then finally, on the 31 of October, 1917, he was moved for the final time to the rank of Staff Sergeant, still in the 13th Infantry Brigade Headquarters. During all this however, he was also wounded twice in action and made a full recovery and came back to serve both times.
Life after the war
Very little is known about Arnold after the war. He returned home to Adelaide, South Australia after being wounded twice in battle. He was then discharged from the army on the 18 of August, 1919. Arnold was awarded 3 medals for his services; the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal from General Birdwood on the 6th of March, 1920. He then moved to Melbourne, where he passed away on the 27th of July 1974 at age 87 in Heidelberg, Victoria. There is no information of where he was buried or cremated.
