His older brother 3783 Private Frederick John Brown 51st Battalion AIF was killed in action near Passchaendale 12th October 1917, age 25.

Robert was a Leongatha State School past student as was his brother. He enlisted in Helena Vale Western Australia during 1914. He was posted as missing in action at Gallipoli and his death was not confirmed until 29 September 1917 at a Court of Inquiry at Rouen that concluded he had died in April at Gallipoli, confirmed by Lt General Birdwood.

Catherine Brown received his 14-15 Star in Leongatha in 1920. ByAugust 1921 both parents were deceased and C Brown received all medals as the eldest brother.
