Jim's Death

Jim's battalion was involved in support trench work and repairs along the railway track, and were subject to heavy shelling resulting in a number of casualties. He was buried where he fell, next to the railway line. The area is now a field, alongside the pathway between the Passchendaele Museum at Zonnebeke and Tyne Cot Cemetery, just where it intersects with Schipstraat (Source: Map reference on the war record, applied to a modern map by the archivist at the Museum).

Postcard from Jim

Dear Stan
Just card wishing you many happy returns of the day & hope you will be spared to see many more of these. I am in the hospital in France now with a broken leg. I came to grief the first morning we were here so I have not seen much of the place yet but there is not much to see as we are camped out in the country. It is a lot better than being in [censored]. It is a treat to see the green grass & a few trees instead of all the desert like in Egypt. We have been here nearly a fortnight now. I will write more in a day or two so good night with love from Jim

[Jim's brother Stan's birthday was on 3 May, and Jim’s Army Record shows that he fractured his right patella on 30 March 1916.]

Death of Signaller J. A. P. WHITE

“Signaller JAMES ARTHUR PEARSON WHITE, youngest son of Mrs. L. A. White, Plympton, was killed in action in France on October 10. He was in his 24th year, and was a fine, manly young fellow, with a happy disposition, always ready to help where help was needed. He was a lover of clean sport, and was a member of S.A. Soldiers’ Rifle Club and the Wellington-square Football Club. He will be greatly missed.” - from the Adelaide Chronicle 08 Dec 1917 (p. 39)
