Private Stevenson was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on 29 March 1916 on board RMS Orontes. Private Stevenson embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on board the Huntspill on 7 June 1916 and served on the Western Front with 51st Infantry Battalion. Rolf (Rolph Reynolds Stevenson) was born in 1901 at White Hills in Launceston, Tasmania, fourth of five children of Thomas Lamont Stevenson (b1855 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Frances (Fannie) Reynolds (b1872 in Morven, Tasmania). Thomas was a Labourer in 1892 when he and Fannie married in Launceston. In 1910 the family moved to King Island where Thomas worked as a Contractor - road and scrub clearing - before moving to Devon Meadows at Lang Lang, Victoria where Thomas was a Farmer. Following Thomas' death in 1930, Fannie returned to Tasmania.

Following his Discharge, he worked in Gippsland, Victoria (Morwell Coal Mine) and in 1923 in Melbourne he married Alice Amelia Burkett (b1902 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Alice had lived in Currie, King Island with her family as a child. Rolf and Alice lived in Melbourne where Rolf worked as a Labourer before moving to Yallourn in 1928 - Rolf worked as a Labourer and Rigger at the Brown Coal Mine.
