Son of John Anderson MACKAY of Kinlochvervie, Co. Sutherland and his wife Elizabeth Alice daughter of John THOMPSON of Launceston Tasmania.

Born in Townsville Queensland 27th April 1893 he was educated at Church Grammar School Launceston Tasmania and Dookie Agricultural College Dookie, Victoria.  A Farmer, he volunteered for Imperial service and enlisted on 17 August 1914 after the outbreak of war and left for Egypt 21 October 1914.  He was present at the landing at the Dardanelles on 25 April 1915 but did not land till 29th July and died on H.M. Hospital Ship 'Devanha' on 29 August following wounds received in action at Lone Pine.
