George was the youngest of four children of George Joseph Davis (born 1859 in Port Stephens, NSW) and Cecilia (Celia) Banks (born 1863 at Wallace Farm in Port Stephens, NSW). George Snr, a Farmer and later an Oysterman,  and Celia married in 1886 in Port Stephens, NSW and raised their family there.

George (Jnr) had been a Labourer and a Farmer when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. A Private (Service No: 1289) served with the 34th, 33rd and 36th Infantry Battalions in Belgium and France, including the trenches of the Western Front - Ypres, the Battle of Messines at Broodsendie Ridge, Paschendale. Amiens around Villiers Brettoeux and Hangard Wood. WIA on three occasions, George was Discharged in 1920.

Older brother John had enlisted in the AIF in 1916, but was Discharged that year as Medically Unfit.

George returned to Port Stephens and later that year married Gladys Irene Cornell (born 1891 in Penrith, NSW). The family settled at Swan Bay in Karuah where George was an Oyster Lessee. George died in 1973 and Gladys in 1986.
