True name Alan Melrose Hayes
Son of John Thomas Hayes and Jeannie Hayes of South Merbein, Victoria formerly of 26 Sussex Street, Moonee Ponds, Victoria
Brother of James Matheson Hayes who returned to Australia on 7 November 1915 having served with the 7th Battalion; Trevor Batty Hayes who returned to Australia on 21 January 1919 having served with the 7th Field Artillery Brigade and Francis Hayes who returned to Australia on 1 April 1919 having served with the 5th Battalion
Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

“On 25 April at the original landing I saw Lance Corporal Hayes shot as he was getting out of the boat. He was killed, he jumped out just before me. I knew him well.” Private T. Simpson 1189 7th Battalion AIF.
“He was shot whilst disembarking on 25 April. He was pulled out of the water by a man called Hadden.” 424 Private H.C. Prunty 7th Battalion AIF.
