Before he enlisted in the war, Herbert had a younger sister named Jean. She died at the age of 16, at November 5th 1914. This was a year before he enlisted, at the age of 18. (Source: https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=99189424)

Just a few months after he enlisted, Herbert contracted a case of the measles. He was in hospital for three days until he was transferred to another hospital until next month, after 27 more days of treatment, he was discharged back into duty.

In 1918, after three years if service, disaster struck. Herbert caught tuberculosis and was discharged from duty. He died on the 2nd of August, 1918. May he live on in our hearts.

Biography

Suffering from Tuberculosis, Cpl. McInnis was discharged from Service on 12 Jul 1918, and he succumbed to the illness and died 3 weeks later, on 02 Aug 1918 

"McINNES.- The FRIENDS of the late Mr. HERBERT CLOW McINNES, late of the 12th Battalion, are informed that his Remains will be removed from the residence of his father (J. C. McInnes), Kalgoorlie-road, Largs Bay, on SATURDAY, at 11 a.m., for interment in the Cheltenham Cemetery..." - from the Adelaide Advertiser 03 Aug 1918 (nla.gov.au)

"LATE CPL. H. C. McINNES

Cpl. Herbert Clon McInnes, whose death has occurred as the result of a breakdown in health, following upon active service abroad, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McInnes, of Kalgoorlie road, Largs. He was educated at the Alberton Public School, and worked at the office of Messrs. H. Muecke & Co., Port Adelaide, as a shipping clerk. He enlisted on April 15, 1915, and embarked for the front on June 21 of the same year as a member of the 7th reinforcements of the 12th Battalion. He was on Gallipoli and was present at the evacuation. He was in France on active service for 2 years and 9 months, before he was invalided home. The deceased soldier, who was in his twenty-second year, had many friends, and was held in high esteem." - from the Adelaide Observer 14 Sep 1918 (nla.gov.au)
