Born in Ipswich Queensland to parents John MacDonald and Jane Shute. James was 30 years old when he joined the army. He worked as a Baker. James father was a wheelwright. In his war record, it states he was married to Edith Sykes at St Marys Whitechapel England. Unclear if he came back to Australia with her as it states on his death certificate that he is not married.
