Meritorious Service Medal
'By devotion to duty and the application of a knowledge of Field Engineering far above the average, this N.C.O. - the Pioneer Sergeant of the Battalion - has been of the utmost service to his Unit. During operations near ZONNEBEKE in September, 1917, and near BROODSEINDE - in October, 1917, in times of emergency he constructed overhead cover and shell-hole posts often under heavy fire - work which undoubtedly saved many lives. While in the front line near HOLLEBEKE 20th/29th January, 1918, he completed the camouflaging of all the posts in the outpost line. So skilfully was this accomplished as to baffle detection either by direct observation or from aerial photograph. He has served with the Unit since 30th July 1915, and during the whole of that time has been a model of all that a soldier should be. I strongly recommend him for award.'
