76 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 1st March 1949, Sergeant Matthew Hughes Harris, 18th Battalion (A. A. Pay Corps, Reg No-1937), clerk from 3 Fleming Street, Islington, New South Wales and 18 Murray Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. CATHOLIC 2-43. 141.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 19th July 1885 as Mathew to George and Mary Cecelia Harris; husband of Elsie May Harris nee Agland, married 1921, Wickham, N.S.W., died 11.9.1965, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 78, sleeping at ANGLICAN 3-206. 59, Mat enlisted on the 15th June 1915 with the 20th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A54 Runic on the 9th August 1915.
Wounded in action - 24.8.1916 (GSW right leg, mild), 14.5.1918 (GSW shoulder).
Admitted to hospital 12.10.1918 (blepharitis - inflammation of the eyelids).
Granted leave from 20.1.1919 to 3.2.1919.
Attached to A. A. Pay Corps 10.3.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 27.4.1919.
Mat arrived home on the 11th June 1919, being discharged on the 18th August 1919.
Mr. Harris’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Islington district did not produce a War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Mat’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge, 27/2/1949.
