Biography

Ralph Dorschel DOUGHTY was born on 1st October, 1891 in Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand

His parents were William Mamby DOUGHTY and Susanna BALDING who married in 1873 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England

He had previous service for 5 years in the  H Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery when he enlisted with the Field Artillery Brigade 1, Battery 2 - Unit embarked from Sydney on the transport ship Argyllshire on 18th October, 1914

He was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when acting as Forward Observing Officer.  He sent back valuable information and was responsible for bringing artillery fire to bear on the enemy at a critical time.  Date 11th Oct. 1917 Commonwealth Gazette

He saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front

Ralph died of wounds on 25th July, 1917 and is buried at Coxyde Military cemetery , Belgium - his name also appears on the Australian War Memorial -his last rank was Lieutenant in 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade
