Leslie Wood was born in Pioneer, Tasmania, the son of Elizabeth Wood, and his father was Chinese but died when Leslie was only four years of age. Leslie was seriously wounded at Messines in Belgium and was admitted to the County Middlesex War Hospital, Napsbury, St. Albans, England on 24 June 1917. His right arm was amputated and he had a gunshot wound to the chest. He was awarded a Military Medal for the action in which he was wounded. He returned to Australia and was given a huge welcome in Pioneer April 1918. He was discharged from the AIF on 27 September 1918. He died aged 92 years.
