Walt was the eleventh of fourteen children of Thomas Coleman (born 1838 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Margaret Duff (born 1846 in Scotland). Thomas (a Blacksmith) married Margaret in 1864 in Indi, Victoria where they settled and raised their family.

Walt was a Blacksmith and Driver in Freeburgh, Indi, Victoria and in 1909 married Elezabeth Eva Syphers (born 1890 in Young, NSW). Walt enlisted in the AIF in January 1916 (Private; Service No:5057) and served with the 7th Infantry Battalion and 15th Light Trench Mortar Battery in France. He was Discharged in June 1919.

Walt and Eva lived in Freeburgh, Bright, Indi where Walt worked as a Carter. In 1922 they relocated to Wangaratta where Walt was a Farmer. Eva died in 1947 and Walt retired to Eurora, Indi in the 1950's where he died in 1975.
