Beloved Husband of Mary Bacon

Alfred Leonard Bacon, son of Mr. A Bacon, of Fairy Street Warrnambool, received his early education at the Warnambool School.  He gained a scholarship, attended the Warrnambool College, and matriculated.  He joined the service of the Education Department in 1908, being appointed temporary head teacher at School 3290 Yarramyliup.  He was permanent head teacher at School 2818, Dederang North in 1909, and in 1910 he entered the Teachers' Training College, leaving with the Trained Teacher's Certificate in 1911.  He filled the post of temporary assistant at the Kerang Higher Elementary School in 1912, and was appointed third master at the St. Arnaud High School in 1914, whence he enlisted.  He is recorded as a most painstaking and thorough teacher.  

He enlisted on the 20th July 1915, and embarked with the 12th reinforcements to the 24th Battalion on the trasport Euripides on the 4th of April 1916.  Disembarking at Egypt, he was in camp at Tel-el-Kebir for some weeks, and arrived in England in June.  He joined his unit on the 19th of that month, and went to France as a Private in the Ypres Sector,  He spent the winter on the Somme.  He was promoted Corporal on the 6th of April, 1917, and to commissioned rank on the 11th of May.  On the 9th of October, he was severely wounded in the thight, and he was kept in hospital in France till the 5th of May 1918, when he was tranferred to the London General Hospital.

He returned to Australia as an invalid on the hospital ship Kanowna on the 22nd of May, spent some time at the Caulfield Military Hospital, and was dischared as medically unfit on the 27th of November.

Alfred died at No. 18 Findon Street, Hawthorn on the 5th of April 1919 aged 30 years and was buried at the Brighton Cemetery.
