Born at Silloth, Carlisle, England between 1868 and 1875 to Thomas and ? Howes, Thomas had served with the Royal Navy when he enlisted July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Mr Howes was not wounded during his service, but returned home July 1918 with rheumatism and being overage.
His name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Navigation Department Honor Roll (unveiled on the 15th December 1917).
I placed a wooden cross July 2019 at Mr Howes’s unmarked grave, now forgotten, in remembrance of his service for God, King and Country.
