Son of Henry William Underwood and Elizabeth Jane Underwood nee Scadden of Port Road, Woodville, SA. On 1 March 1903 Ernest was baptised in the St. Margaret Anglican Church, Woodville, SA
Commenced return to Australia on 29 April 1915 aboard HT Suevic disembarking on 24 May 1915 at Melbourne for onward travel to Adelaide.
Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
On 23 September 1916 Ernest married Alice Elizabeth Feehan at the residence of W. Hawke of Kirkcaldy now known as Henley Beach, SA
