Serving in the AIF as Leslie Doblie, the correct spelling of his surname was Dobley. Son of Nassif (George) Dobley and Alice Mary Holliday, Leslie was a native of Allendale in Victoria. His birth registration appears under the name Elias Doblie.
PRIVATE LESLIE DOBBIE [sic]
Mr S. Dobbie, of 117 Creswick road, has received word that his nephew, Pte Leslie Dobbie, has been killed in action in France. The deceased soldier was previously reported missing. He saw service in Egypt in 1915, and was invalided home. Later on he enlisted again, and left Australia on the 20th October with the 4th Reinforcements to the 39th Battalion. The deceased soldier was 20 years old, and was born in Allendale, and was educated at the Avoca school. Prior to enlisting he was living with his uncle in Ballarat.

On the 4th October 1917, Leslie Doblie, a member of the 39th Battalion's D Company, 16th Platoon, was initially reported MIA. It was later confirmed he had been KIA. Leslie was reportedly killed instantly by an exploding shell as he moved into the line at Zonnebeke and later buried near Poperinghe, Belgium. The exact location of his grave was to be lost during ensuing battles.
