Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From 52nd Battalion AIF

Pte Philip BERGHOFFER was a young farmer, single and 22, when he enlisted in late June 1916. He had served with the Rifle Club Reserves pre-war and had previously tried to enlist but had been rejected because he was of German descent. He sailed with the 6th Reinforcements to the 52nd Bn on 7 October 1916, arriving in Plymouth on 21 November. He marched to Codford Camp and was then hospitalised with infection of the middle ear. He eventually moved to France and joined the 52nd in the field on 16 July 1917. He was wounded in action on 26 September, being transferred to the Field Ambulance with penetrating wounds to the chest and head. He died on his wounds on the 30th.
