Biography contributed by Karan CAMPBELL-DAVIS

Sylvester Clarence BRACEY was born in Derby, Tasmania on 8th June 1899, to parents Lily Mildred (nee CLEAVER) and William James BRACEY (spelt as BRACY in Tasmanian birth record).

A single, 18 year old clerk at the time, Sylvester enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Scottsdale, Tasmania on 9th June 1917, the day after his 18th birthday (he had previously tried to enlist in August 1916, but was discovered to be underage).  Allocated the regimental number 52237 and the rank of Private, Sylvester completed his recruit training at Claremont, before being assigned to the 1st General Service Reinforcements, Tasmania, with whom he was promoted to the rank of Acting Corporal on 23rd February 1918.  On 1st May 1918, Sylvester embarked aboard HMAT Euripides in Sydney, for active service overseas.

Upon arrival in Liverpool, England on 2nd July 1918, Sylvester reverted back to the rank of Private, and was sent to the 9th Training Battalion in Fovant.  On 22nd September he proceeded to France, where he was taken on strength with the 40th Infantry Battalion a week later.

On 1st February 1919, after a one month detachment to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, Sylvester was admitted to the 11th Field Ambulance with acute rheumatism.  Later that day, he was transferred to the 3rd Australian General Hospital in Abbeville, France.  On 3rd March, he was invalided back to England, where he was admitted to the King George Military Hospital in London, with acute rheumatism and influenza.  After 2 weeks, Sylvester was discharged from hospital, and granted 2 weeks furlough, after which he was admitted to Number 1 Convalescent Depot at Sutton Veny.

On 3rd May 1919, Sylvester embarked in England aboard HMAT Leicestershire for return to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on 21st June.  He was subsequently discharged medically unfit in the 1st Military District (Queensland) on 31st March 1921.  For his service, Sylvester was later awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

On 24th January 1925, Sylvester married Marjorie Gertrude MILLARD in regional Queensland.  He was appointed as a sugar cane tester in Qunaba, North East of Bundaberg, in May the same year.

Sylvester died in Brisbane on 5th September 1946, aged just 47, and was buried in the Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens, Holland Park, Brisbane, Queensland.
