John RILEY was born in North Sydney, NSW, on 15th January 1897. His parents were John and Mary Riley. He joined the NSWGovernment Railways and Tramways on 14th April 1914 as a cleaner in the Electric Tramways at Sydney. On 13th May 1915 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

John joined the AIF on 10th May 1915 and was posted to the 3rd Infantry Battalion with the rank of Private (Service Number 2221). He nominated his mother as his next of kin. When he enlisted the family was still living in North Sydney.

He embarked for Egypt aboard HMAT A63 ‘Karoola’ at Sydney on 16th June 1915. He was taken on strength on the 3rd Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli on 4th August 1915. On 7th August 1915, in the attack on Lone Pine, he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to the lung. He was evacuated to Malta where he died of his wounds on 2nd September 1915.

John’s grave is in Addorolata Cemetery, Malta, and his place of association is North Sydney, NSW.

After his death his mother was granted a pension which was initially £13 per annum with effect from 2 November 1915 but was amended to £1 per fortnight with effect from 3rd August 1918.
