George Greenwood was reported as missing at Anzac on the day of the landing 25 April 1915. At a Court of Inquiry held in the field, 16 October 1915, he was pronounced as 'killed or prisoner of war, Gallipoli, 24 May 1915'.

A second Court of Inquiry held at Rouen, 3 September 1917, pronounced fate as 'killed in action, on or about 25 April 1915'; verdict confirmed by General W R Birdwood, 23 September 1917.

His death was reported by the Ballarat Star 5 October 1917. KILLED IN ACTION. LANCE-SERGEANT GREENWOOD.

Mr. A. Greenwood, of 1319 Dana street, has been officially advised by the Defence Department that his son, Lance-Sergeant George Herbert Green-wood, was killed in action on or about Sunday, 25th April, 1915, the day on which the Australians landed at Gallipoli. The first Court of Enquiry, held in December, 1915 reported that Lance-Sergeant Greenwood was either killed in action or a prisoner of war.

The deceased, who was 21 years of age, left with the first battalion to go from Ballarat on 19th August, 1914. Be-fore enlisting he was employed at the local branch of the State Savings Bank, and he was just about to go up for his final accountancy examination when he left. Lance-Sergeant Greenwood was a member of the Wendouree Rowing Club, and the Ballarat Lacrosse Club.
