Son of John Wesley Hugh Lear and Sarah Lear of 'Gowan Brae' 14 Allen Street, Arncliffe, Sydney, NSW. Previously of 143 NOrth Street, Openshaw, Manchester, England. Brother of Harold Lear of Auburn, NSW

While living in Manchester he was apprenticed to Crossley Motors Ltd.
