'On night of 20th/21st September, 1917, near ZOUAVE WOOD, near YPRES, gunner LEE whilst acting as Battery guide to new position took possession of a gun which had been bogged whilst under a very heavy enemy barrage and succeeded in extricating it and getting it to the new Battery position. He had previously guided three other gun teams through the barrage. Gunner LEE throughout the whole engagement has shown wonderful courage and devotion to duty. His coolness and skill has inspired his subsection whilst he has been acting as No. 1.'
