15 Oct 1918: Honoured Military Cross, For cosnpicuous gallantry and skilful leadership in the attack east of Monument Wood near Villers Bretonneux on 17 July 1918 in leading his company over 500 yards of open country to the first objective, 'The Mound' in the face of heavy machine gun fire from the front and right flank. The supreme dash of his men enabled the capture of five enemy machine guns, and was directly attributable to the example set by Captain Murphy who personally lead a party in capturing one machine gun crew. Moving forward he was severely wounded in the arm by an explosive bullet but continued his command and refused to be bandaged or assisted until advised the final objective had been captured.
