The Frosts of “Park Hill”

Jabez and Mary Ann Frost arrived in South Australia in March 1848. In 1855 they purchased a property at Chinkford and named it “Park Hill”. Their son, William Thomas Frost, continued to farm Park Hill after Jabez died in 1876. William married Annie Elizabeth Leeder in 1884 and all of their ten children were born in Manoora. William was a prominent citizen who was made a Justice of the Peace in 1901.

Three of William and Annie’s sons enlisted for service in World War 1

Ernest Arthur Frost was born in Manoora on 28 May 1890. A farmhand at Manoora, Ernest was 19 years 8 months when he enlisted at Petersburg (Peterborough) on the 22nd February 1916.

Initially posted to the 2nd Depot Battalion AIF Ernest soon found himself attached to the Light Horse and finally on 1 July to the 20th Reinforcements 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment which embarked from Adelaide aboard HMS Malwa on 27 July 1916.

After disembarking the reinforcements were attached to the 1st Light Horse Training Regiment at Moascar and finally on 29 December were taken on strength of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. The 3rd Light Horse was involved in the Allied advance across the Sinai and was subsequently involved in the fighting to secure the Turkish outpost at Rafa on 9 January 1917. A stint of protective duty along the line of communications through the Sinai followed. The 3rd’s next major engagement was the abortive second battle of Gaza on 19 April. Gaza finally fell on 7 November, after a wide outflanking move via Beersheba. The 3rd Light Horse Regiment participated in the advance to Jaffa that followed, and was then committed to operations to clear and occupy the west bank of the Jordan River.

Just before Christmas Ernest was admitted to hospital suffering from tonsillitis and was again readmitted just after rejoining his unit in February. Finally at the end of May he was well enough to rejoin the 3rd Light Horse. On  11 October 1918 Ernest was appointed a driver.

At the end of March 1919 Ernest embarked aboard HT Malwa (the same ship he had sailed from Australia on) for leave in the United Kingdom. Within a few weeks he had been arrested and appeared before the Magistrate at Marlborough Street Police Court on 25 April (Anzac Day) 1919 charged with indecent behaviour. Ernest was fined forty shillings which he paid and was subsequently released.

On 12 June 1919 Ernest embarked from England for return to Australia aboard the ship SS Port Darwin and was discharged on the 31st December 1919.

Ernest was  Vice Captain of the Manoora Football Club's 1925 Premiership side. In 1927 Ernest married Violet Annie Field, of Sandwell, and then took up farming at Dowerin in the wheat belt of Western Australia. Ernest and Mollie had four children. Ernest died in 1932 at the age of 36 years.
