Enlisted in Adelaide at 26 years and 6 months of age, on 19 August 1915.
Allotted army number 1779 and the rank of private.
Embarked at Adelaide for Suez with the 2nd Reinforcements, 32nd Battalion on the HMAT 'Borda' on 11 January 1916.
Disembarked at Suez on 9 February 1916.
Proceeded to England on 16 June 1916.
Proceeded overseas to France on 5 September 1916.
Taken on strength of the 32nd Battalion on 25 October 1916.
Admitted to the 6th General Hospital, sick, (trench feet), on 12th January 1917.
Taken on strength of the 5th Australian Divisional Base Details at Etaples on 16 January 1917.
Admitted to the 26th General Hospital, sick, (double hernia), on 10 March 1917.
Transferred to England and admitted to War hospital on 24 March 1917.
Proceeded on furlough on 9 July 1917.
Taken on strength of number 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs on 28 july 1917.
Embarked for Australia on MT 'Suevic' on 27 September 1917.
Disembarked at Adelaide on 18 November 1917.

Charles Murphy was the 2nd eldest son of Arthur Thomas Murphy and Eleanor Bowes.
Charles married Lois Muriel Steer on 20 December 1912 and had three children, Charles Elliot Murphy - b. 23 Jan 1914, Eleanor Cicely Murphy - b. 21 September 1918 and Marion Lois Murphy - b. 30 June 1920 d. aged 8 years on 10 December 1928.
His wife Lois committed suicide and Charles later got remarried to May Watson. The were no childern from the second marriage.
Charles died in 1968 and was cremated. His ashes were scattered over the grounds of the Morialta Protestant Childrens home.
