Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

The tragic story of a Returned Veteran who served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

98 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 12th January 1924, Gunner William George Sharpe, Australian Army Pay Corps (Reg No-27274), ticket writer and general storekeeper from c/o Scott's Ltd, Newcastle, New South Wales and 28 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of one (Irene), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 30. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) G SW. 62.

Born at County Clare, Ireland about 1894 to Richard and Jeannie Sharpe; husband of Edith Florence Sharpe nee Curley (married 5.9.1916, St Peters, N.S.W., died?) of Beaumont Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 55 Cleary Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., William enlisted June 1916 with the 4th Australian Divisional Ammunition Column at Marrickville, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 22.5.1917 (not stated), 21.11.1918 (not stated).

Wounded in action - 5.11.1917 (gassed), 30.8.1918 (GSW left hand).

William returned home May 1919, being discharged on the 10th June 1919.

Mr. Sharpe’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 20th May 1922, 627 names originally inscribed, 634 names now inscribed, 98 Fallen), Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

The tragic circumstances of William’s death were reported - coroner's report of accidental death (collision with a tram while riding a motor cycle).

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
