Son of Emile Gustave Ulm and Ada Emma Ulm nee Greenland of 'Leona', Keston Avenue, Mosman, NSW. Brother of Adrian Ulm, full name George Adrian Fredric Ulm, who returned to Australia om 20 May 1919 having served with the 17th Battalion.
Commenced return to Australia due to being underage and not having parental consent, first time, on 5 July 1915 aboard HT Ballarat disembarking at Melbourne
On several occasions he was promoted to the ranks of Acting Corporal and Acting Sergeant each time reverting to Private
Commenced return to Australia on 4 January 1919 aboard HT Morvada disembarking on 25 February 1919
