59 years ago today, on the 25th August 1965, Corporal John Stanley Fleming, referred to as Stan, 2nd Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-7241), painter from Mitchell Street, Muswellbrook, New South Wales, father of one (Ann), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 3-88. 77.

Born at Muswellbrook, New South Wales about 1893 to David, Alderman, died 31.1.1945, Muswellbrook, N.S.W., age 85, and Margaret Isabella Fleming nee Riley, died 30.10.1949, age 85, mother of 10; husband of Doris I Fleming nee Smythe, married 1928, Cessnock, N.S.W., died 17.6.1989, age 82, sleeping here, Stan enlisted on the 30th October 1916 with the 13th Battalion at Rutherford, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on the 7th February 1917.

On leave to Paris from 25.2.1918 to 6.3.1918 and 19.2.1919 to 26.2.1919.

On leave to England from 11.9.1918 to 2.10.1918.

On leave to Italy from 22.4.1919 to 14.5.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 24.7.1919.

Stan arrived home on the 30th September 1919, being discharged on the 8th November 1919.

Mr. Fleming’s name has been inscribed on the Muswellbrook War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Stan’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
