Biography contributed by Ross Martin

George William Waugh was born in Shepparton, Victoria on 8th June 1887.

He was working as a blacksmith when he joined the Victorian Police Force on 28/9/1911. He served at Melbourne, Mildura, Inglewood, Trentham and was at Dartmoor when he enlisted in the AIF on 16/4/1915.

He was a big man, 6ft tall and weighed 17.5 stone.

He left Australia on 16/5/1915 aboard the HMAT Ulysses as part of the 21st Battalion. During transfer to Gallipoli the ship he was travelling aboard (HMT Southland) was torpedoed, and George was "Specially mentioned by the Commander in Chief for work done in assisting HMT Southland into Mudros after being torpedoed". After this incident he served on Gallipoli until the evacuation.

He was appointed Sergeant on 1/2/1916 and arrived in France in March 1916.

George was killed in action on 2/8/1916 during the fighting at Pozieres. It was reported that he was hit by a shell while part of a group carrying ammunition to the front line. He was the only man killed by the shell.

Prior to leaving Australia George was engaged to Miss Nellie Tickle of Warracknabeal. Miss Tickle was the beneficary in George's will.
