Stories from the Cemetery

Challenger George Farmer, MC, M.I.D.x 2 – One of our Anzacs

In 2017 our dedicated researchers identified several unmarked graves in our cemetery belonging to WW1 soldiers.

Challenger G Farmer was one of them.

We joined with the Headstone Project to ensure that the final resting places of these men were acknowledged and formally marked with a plaque. The result was an unveiling of plaques on 13 previously unmarked graves by the Governor of Tasmania, Kate Warner on 11th November 2017.

Challenger George Farmer was born in Hobart in 1888 and was described as bank clerk when he enlisted in 1914. He had been a member of the Derwent Regiment - a volunteer reserve regiment in Hobart.

He was initially assigned to 4th Company, Australian Supply Company and saw action at both Gallipoli, where he landed ashore on the 26th April 1915, and in France rising to the rank of Major. He was both Mentioned in Despatches and awarded a Military Cross. He later served in WW2 and attained the rank of Lt Colonel with the 30th Australian Garrison Battalion of the Citizens Militia Force.

There are almost 200 WW1 veterans buried in Ulverstone General Cemetery and thanks to the Headstone Project and the work of our volunteers, all have headstones or plaques.
