Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Henry Bourke was the son of James Francis and Theresa Bourke of Uralla, New South Wales. His father James, died of paralysis in April 1915. Henry had 10 brothers and sisters. He was known as ‘Con’ to his family and friends.

An older brother, 4117 Lce. Cpl. Ambrose Stewart Bourke 4th Battalion AIF, later died of wounds in Belgium on 6 October 1917, aged 26.

Henry enlisted in late 1915 at only 19 years of age and was with the 3rd Battalion when they took part in the epic capture of Pozieres, and Henry was very badly wounded around the 24 July 1916. He was taken to hospital at Etaples in France with severe wounds to his back and chest. Although treated in the 26th General Hospital there for 15 days he succumbed to his wounds on 10 August 1916.

As he was reported wounded his death came as a great shock to his family. His mum, Theresa received all of his personal effects, medals and other entitlements.
