Add my storyBiography
Pop was a slightly built man, and quite a character. He was orphaned early and came to Australia as a ship's boy. At some point he served in the Boer War, beginning as a drummer boy. Pop and Grandma, the lovely Louisa nee Hinz, were married at Clifton in 1910, and had 3 children at the time of his enlistment WW1. Pop and his brother-in-law, Andrew Hinz, both served in France. Pop was gassed, and lived to tell the tale. He returned to work as a lengthsman, building and repairing railway lines after the war. 8 yr old Ernie was a victim of the Spanish flu in 1919. Two more children were born. At the outbreak of WW2, Pop again tried to enlist - by lowering his age. The authorities pointed out that he MUST be too old, having served in the two prior conflicts.
Pop eventually retired to Caloundra, living in a tiny boatshed behind a house at Two-way Lake, mowing lawns. Later, he returned to the family home in Cooper St, Toowoomba with Grandma. The last few years were spent in Toowoomba General Hospital. Pop always said his best years were spent in the Army! - Sandra Evans
