Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

Oliver Plowman Harris was born in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire in the first quarter of 1882. He married Edith Jane Gunnyon on the 8.7.1914 at Scots Church Fremantle and they were living at 17 Barnett St Fremantle (same address as for his mother). In 1916, their daughter Ilfra Lorraine was born in South Fremantle.

Oliver enlisted at Perth on the 31.5.16, aged 34 years 3 months. Initially a Private at number 71 Depot, he was issued with Service number 2336. He was a farmer and gave his denomination as Wesleyan. There was a family sheep farm at Lomos, near Brookton. Edith Harris, his wife, was listed as next of kin. Oliver was described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34-38 inches, fresh complexion, blue eyes and black hair.

Oliver embarked at Fremantle on the 30.10.16 per Port Melbourne, disembarking at Devonport on the 28.12.16. He proceeded to France on the 19.4.17 and transferred from the 11th Infantry Battalion to the 43rd Battalion. He was wounded in action on the 4.10.17 and evacuated to England with gunshot wounds to his face, jaw, neck and arm on the 12.10.17. He set sail to return to Australia on the Durham Castle on the 10.3.18. He was transferred to the Orontes, which left Cape Town on the 19.4.18. Oliver was discharged on the 24.9.18

In 1920 son Gregory was born in Fremantle, and in 1928 daughter Betty Constance was born. In 1939 Ilfra Lorraine married William Campbell McMiles and Edith and Oliver celebrated their Silver Wedding. They were living at Leighton Farm, Lomos. In 1947 his grandson William died suddenly at Corrigin hospital. In June 1951, Oliver applied to be a Justice of the Peace. He died on the 3.11.1957 in Harvey and was cremated at Karrakatta Cemetery.
