From 52nd Battalion AIF
IN AUSTRALIA – 8 FEBRUARY 1919
The war was over, but men were still being struck down by wounds and disease. One former soldier from the 52nd died on the 8th:
Private William George LUCAS #2930, 31 years old from Mole Creek TAS. Died of Disease. Buried in Campbell Town Cemetery, Tasmania.
William LUCAS enlisted in July 1915, leaving his work as a labourer. He embarked with the 9th Reinforcements to the 12th Bn two months later on 27 September. After arriving in Egypt, he contracted mumps before being transferred to the 52nd in April 1916. He proceeded to France in June and it appears he survived the battles at Mouquet Farm and Noreuil. But then in April he came down with pleurisy which saw him evacuated to England. He was eventually returned to Australia in late 1917 and was treated in Melbourne at No.12 Australian General Hospital. By May 1918, he had been discharged in Tasmania as being permanently disabled due to his chest infection. He died on 8 February 1919. His name is listed on the AWM Roll of Honour.
