Victor John Gray was born on the 2nd of January 1893 in Kingston, Tasmania. His hometown is Fern Tree, Tasmania. He lived with his parents named John and Louisa Gray and his younger brother named Charles Gray who also enlisted as a serviceman in the war at the same time as his older brother. (Service number of Charles Gray is 6741). His schooling before heading off to war was at the Neika State School in Tasmania. Before Gray enlisted in the war, his occupation was either known as a bushman or a farmer. He had an adventurous spirit as he loved riding his motorcycle on Huon Road and he also travelled to New Zealand.  

Victor John Gray enlisted to fight in World War 1 on the 5th of July 1916 in Claremont, Tasmania alongside his younger brother for the 22nd reinforcements for the 12th infantry Battalion and was shipped on the HMAT Palermo A56 out of Melbourne.

He served in the 12th Infantry Battalion 13 to 23 Reinforcements (January to December 1916).

Gray was wounded during the preparations for the attack on the Hindenburg Line at Bullecourt, which then resulted in a compound fracture to the skull from gun-shot wounds and he died on the 10th of April 1917 at the age of 24. Five days after the death of Victor John Gray his brother Charles Gray was then killed at Lagnicourt.

Victor John Gray is now buried in Bapaume Australian Cemetery, Bapaume, Picardie, France.

"...6737 Private (Pte) Victor John Gray of Fern Tree, Tas. A bushman before enlisting in July 1916, Pte Gray formed part of the 22nd Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion along with his younger brother 6741 Pte Charles Gray. Victor Gray was mortally wounded during the preparations for the attack of the Hindenberg Line at Bullecourt and died on 10 April 1917, age 24.
