Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 14th November 1916, Private Frederick Agland, 19th Battalion (Reg No-3454), warehouse manager (R. Hall and Sons), from 100 Denison Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at the Battle of Flers, age 35. Cause of death not stated.

Born at Orange, New South Wales on the 5th September 1881 to John (died 16.11.1915, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 71) and Isabella Agland nee Kidd (died 4.9.1936, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 90), Fred enlisted on the 8th November 1915 (as Fred) at Holsworthy, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 12th December 1915.

Reported Missing in Action 14.11.1916.

Reported Killed in Action 11.12.1917.

Mr. Agland’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Place of Association - Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Fred’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Agland gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-58. 26.

Younger brother Adolphus Doran Claridan (born Sydney, New South Wales, October 1896?, soldier from 100 Denison Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, enlisted 5.7.1917, 55th Battalion & 1st Battalion, Reg No-3592 & 3592A, wounded in action - 20.9.1918 (GSW right hand), RTA invalided 1.2.1919, died 22.9.1970, Hamilton South, N.S.W., age 74, not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.
