Vincent Erle BRINKMAN, (Service Number 1656) was born on 1 June 1892. He began employment with the NSWGR as a junior porter in Sydney in January 1913 and progressed to porter by 1915 when, on 7 June, he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces. This recording of this leave would seem to have been after the event as his enlistment papers are dated 18 May. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT ‘Kanowna’ on 19 June. Six weeks later, on 27 August, he was missing in action at Gallipoli. A Court of Enquiry in January 1916 concluded that it was ‘reasonable to suppose dead’. His service papers use the name Victor, though all other details correspond, and he describes himself as a ‘railway employee’. Several letters from his parents are included in the National Archives file, and they use the name Vincent Erle.
As with all other Gallipoli deaths without a known grave, Brinkman is recorded on the memorial at Lone Pine.
