Cecil Alfred was born to Charles and Elizabeth Smith of "Box Hill" Armidale NSW in 1893.

He was 23 years old when he enlisted on 19th September 1916.

He enlisted as a private with the 12th Light Horse Regiment and embarked aboard HMAT Clan MacCorquodale from Melbourne
