Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Walter Stanley Missingham was the son of James and Sarah Ann Missingham of Kingaroy, Queensland.
He joined the 15th Battalion at Gallipoli on 2 August 1915. Less than a week later he was severely wounded in the stomach by a piece of shrapnel during the August offensive and evacuated to Cairo, Egypt.
He rejoined the 15th Battalion after the evacuation of Gallipoli in Egypt. He took part in the fighting at Pozieres and was recommended for a Military Medal.
“About 9.45 p.m. on the 8th August 1916 during operations near Mouquet Farm in an attack on the German trenches these members found they were detached from the Company. They noticed a great number of flares and considerable gunfire coming from the enemy’s trench. Corporal Missingham called on the others and they charged and gained a footing in the trench and bombed a way along the trench and accounted for 20 Germans, they continued along the trench and finding no enemy they jumped out and proceeded to get touch with their Company, along the way they collected some of the other men and got touch again.”
He received no award but was promoted to Corporal then Sergeant soon after. During October 1916 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant.
Walter was reported missing after the Battle of Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. It was soon established that he was a prisoner of war of the Germans. He was promoted to Lieutenant while he was in Germany on 19 June 1917.
After the armistice he arrived back in England on New Years Day 1919, was returned to Australia during February 1919 promoted to Captain in April 1919. His appointment in the AIF was terminated during June 1919.
