He was  22 and a son of Ernest and Emily Margaret Upchurch, of Somerset, Tasmania. 

His brother, Corporal Charles Ernest Upchurch, MM, aged 20 [52nd Bn.
Australian Infantry, A.I.F.] fell on 16/07/1917.
