Private Donald Gilbert Fort (Service No:6022) enlisted in the AIF on 27 March 1916 and was posted to 39th Battalion Ballarat. Private Fort was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne for Plymouth with his Unit on 28 July 1916 on board HMAT A32 Themistocles. WiA in France on 27 December 1917 (Gas Shell), Private Fort was evacuated to England where he was hospitalised at Middlesex Hospital before embarking for Melbourne on 8 November 1918 on board HT Gaika. Private Fort was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 16 February 1919.

Bert was born in Hamilton, Victoria in 1889, second of twelve children of Archibald (Archie) Fort (b1861 in Hamilton, Victoria) and Flora McInnes (b1866 in Hamilton, Victoria). Archie was a Farmer in 1886 when he and Flora married in Hamilton, where they settled and raised their family and Archie was a Farmer and later a Labourer.

Bert worked at Bundoran via Dunkeld as a Groom, and in 1916 was a Labourer in Hamilton when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Bert was a Labourer in Yulecart via Hamilton in 1927 when he married Agnes Francis (b1890 in Hamilton, Victoria). Bert and Agnes settled in Hamilton where they raised their family and Bert worked as a Labourer until his death in 1946. Agnes died in 1954.
