Pte Sheppard was found guilty of desertion at a FGCM dated 7 May 1917. Originally sentenced to death, his sentence was commuted to 10 years imprisonment by General Plumer. This was later commuted to 10 years on 6 July 1917, then fully suspended on 22 May 1918.
Pte Sheppard was released from prison on that date and rejoined the 51st Battalion on 29 May.
He was found guilty of desertion for a second time at at FGCM dated 25 June 1918, and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, which was commuted to 2 years on 1 August 1918.
He was serving his sentence at Les Attaques Military Prison when he contraced influenza on 16 February 1919.
He was evacuated to the 30th General Hospital at Calais where he died of his illness on 22 February 1919.
