Sometimes when searching for information Dale Atkinson and myself come across some little gems.
Pte Hedley Gunton, 26th Bn, is one of those. Born at Mathinna, Hedley was a soldier in World War One. He was injured fighting in Europe and received a medical discharge with injuries including part of the bone in one arm missing. Later he decided he would try bike racing. Racing sporadically, he made a big if occasional impact. 1st 1920 Latrobe Wheel. 1st 1926 Burnie Wheel. 1st 1931 Burnie Wheel. 1st 1933 Burnie Wheel. Only Stephen Pate has won Burnie more times. When in a position to win his fourth Burnie Wheel he punctured, dismounted and hurled his bike on the oval. Later on he became one of Australias finest croquet players. Hedley Gunton.
