Leslie was the son of Arthur and Alice (nee Freeman) Hewett of Mundoora. He was born at Keili on 6 February 1897. A farmer, he was 21 years old when he enlisted in Adelaide on 1 March 1918.

Leslie was appointed to 2nd Reinforcements “S” UK which entrained to Sydney and embarked aboard RMS “Orontes” on 8 June 1918 and disembarked at Liverpool on 11 August. The war had ended before Leslie was sent to France and allotted to 48 Battalion on 19 February 1919.

Leslie embarked for Australia aboard HMAT A38 “Ulysses” on 23 July 1919 and disembarked in Adelaide on 30 August. He was discharged on 16 September 1919.
