James Clyde BRIDGES, (Service Number 310) born at Granville in 1892, was the son of James Bridges, who was station master at Merrylands for 14 years before retiring in 1914. James, the son, joined the NSWGR&T as a probationer in the Tramways in 1907 but transferred to the Railways as a gatekeeper in 1908. In 1909 he became a junior porter and was serving with his father at Merrylands in 1911 when both were called as witnesses in a court case concerning forged warrants given in exchange for railway tickets. In 1912 he was promoted to porter, and in 1914 to signalman. He was employed as a signalman at Valley Heights when in August 1914 he enlisted in the AIF at Sydney.
Embarked at Sydney in October 1914, his military records do not state when he landed at Gallipoli, but he was killed in action there on 28 April1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
