15 Jan 1919: Honoured Military Cross, For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the attack on 2nd inst. on St. Martins Wood, Lt. O'Loughlin showed exceptional courage and leadership. During the consolidation of St. Martin's Wood heavy gunfire was on coming from the next ridge, hit this officer carried the machine guns forward to the left front of the wood and brought fire to bear on the enemy enabling or troops to cross the open valley and attack and capture the ridge. In taking the final objective he displayed great resource in moving his guns forward and engaging hostile machine guns. His actions inspired confidence to all near him.

Son of E. O'Loughlin of  Highett Street, West Richmond, Victoria.

In January 1918 James received a letter of congratulations and appreciation for gallantry and services rended during operations.
